Extensive tests, innovative prototypes and the group's continued involvement in motorsport prove what is possible – and what will shape the mobility of tomorrow.
However, in a market environment that is constantly evolving, it is also important to be able to quickly adapt powerful solutions to new conditions. The add-on concept is invaluable here. This allows prototypes to be created and small series production to be launched for different platforms in the shortest possible time.
Motorsport
From track to road–whether DTM, rally or Nürburgring 24 Hours–SpaceDrive has been a successfully established part of racing for years. In 2019, Schaeffler ByWire launched the first steer-by-wire race car approved by the Deutscher Motor Sport Bund (DMSB, German Motor Sport Federation) in the form of an Audi RS8. The steering column was completely removed. Instead, a force feedback steering unit virtualizes the entire driving dynamics of the track and puts it in the hands of the driver. The forces and impacts are individually configurable. Competitive racing is not an end in itself – it provides valuable insights for further development.
Space Drive and the DTM
Schaeffler's DTM innovation taxi offers special insights and experiences for guests and partners. This is where you can see the possibilities of SpaceDrive for yourself, including with its extended functions: For example, the switchable and individually adjustable steering ratio or the steering by joystick.
From an add-on solution to an integrated series
Although SpaceDrive is initially aimed at small series production, its initial integrations into series production are already shaping the way the developers work. The standards of the automotive industry and the homologation of newly developed vehicles are important milestones that are also relevant for individual prototypes and custom-made special vehicles.
In contrast to integrated solutions that are difficult to introduce as part of large-scale production, SpaceDrive can be implemented directly as an add-on kit. This makes SpaceDrive the preferred drive-by-wire solution for smaller units and special applications.
